Abstract
Neuroimaging evidences have documented the existence of discrete areas in the occipito-temporal cortex that are selectively involved in the visual perception of human bodies. Furthermore, while occipito-temporal areas respond to viewing human bodies, regardless of their movements, a set of fronto-parietal areas are specifically involved in body action observation.
Here, I’ll review a series of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuropsychological studies that have investigated the specific functional role of visual and motor representations in visual body perception have tested the consequence of their dysfunction in neuropsychological (brain lesion) and psychiatric (eating disorder) patients. In particular, I’ll consider the impact of dysfunctional body-selective areas on visual discrimination of human body forms and body actions and aesthetic body perception.
